Off to Lake Akan—A Scenic Drive with Deer Along the Way

Our journey through Hokkaido started in Hakodate and took us through Jozankei, Sapporo, Furano, Biei, Abashiri, and Shiretoko—finally bringing us to beautiful Lake Akan. We stayed at La Vista Akangawa (Kyoritsu Resort), located within the special area of Akan-Mashu National Park.

I encountered many herds of deer on the mountain trail

Driving along the Akan River in the evening, we spotted herds of deer several times. It felt like being in a safari park—every time we locked eyes with a deer, it was a little heart-racing. That moment, surrounded by untouched wilderness and wildlife, was when I felt the power of nature the most on this trip.

Relaxing in the Lounge with a River View

Many areas in the hotel have Ainu names. The lobby lounge, “Pokkenui,” is a cozy space where you can enjoy coffee by the fireplace (lit during winter) while gazing out at the river. At night, you can take in both the starry sky and the flickering fire—such a calming, nature-infused space.

Large bath and hot spring

The large public bath is open from 3 p.m. to 11 a.m. the next day, featuring stone baths, rock baths, and a hot barrel-style bath. The open-air bath gives you a front-row view of the Akan River. Soaking in the steamy water while listening to the river and watching the trees was pure bliss. I couldn’t help but wonder if a deer might wander by again.

With a full range of skincare products and amenities, you can show up empty-handed and still be totally comfortable—one of the perks of staying at a Kyoritsu Resort.

Coffee Time in the Room

We stayed in a modern Japanese twin room with tatami-style floors, where you take off your shoes and relax. From the window seat—like a little veranda—you get a view of the river. There’s a coffee grinder and fresh beans provided, so you can make your own cup of freshly brewed coffee. Heaven.

They also offered local sweets called Kushiro Wetlands Journey, plus mineral water and a Hokkaido-exclusive soda called Ribbon Citron in the fridge.

The room came with its own hot spring bath, too. The red haori jackets and moss green loungewear were super cute and perfect for lounging around.

Breakfast—Japanese or Western Set Meal

Breakfast was served at “Wakka Pirika.”
The Japanese set featured grilled salmon, sablefish, and steamed Hokkaido pork, among other dishes. The Western set included scallop fry, crab cream pasta, omelet, and three kinds of bread—so filling! Enjoying such a meal while overlooking the river made for a luxurious morning.

Plenty of Complimentary Perks

We also enjoyed the little extras—free ice pops and soft Katsugen (a local yogurt drink) after a bath, plus the famous Yonaki Soba (late-night ramen) served from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m.
I topped my light soy-sauce ramen with aonori seaweed and corn for a perfect late-night snack. *Note: Toppings vary by location.
